WaMoS®II

Ocean State Monitoring System

Wave and surface current monitoring

In a changing environment, sound decisions at sea require timely, accurate data. sigma S6 WaMoS®II is a pervasive, low maintenance sensor easily deployed to provide a real-time understanding of your marine environment. For ports, offshore installations, vessels, and institutional researchers, WaMoS®II is the world’s best-in-class wave and current monitoring radar. The sigma S6 WaMoS®II mitigates the risks involved with helideck operations and cargo lifts, and can be used to evaluate sites for offshore installations with superior real-time data.

Let us show you how superior real-time data and lower life cycle costs allow the Wave and Surface Current Monitoring System to improve the many aspects of your operation.

1. Overview

Rutter sigma S6 radar technology for wave and current monitoring WaMoS®II is used worldwide to provide essential ocean measurements, enhance operational safety, inform for critical infrastructure decisions, and support leading edge research efforts. Real world use cases include site evaluation before construction of marine and marine-adjacent installations such as wind farms, coastal monitoring and oceanographic research, and to ensure the safety of crews and assets during critical on-deck operations. Compared to ocean-deployed wave and current monitoring systems, WaMoS®II is a ‘dry’ solution, providing a lower lifecycle cost with the benefit of technical support 24/7 anywhere in the world.

Developed by Rutter subsidiary, OceanWaveS GmbH of Germany, WaMoS®II has a long history serving the marine and research communities.

2. Technical Superiority

Rutter’s sigma S6 WaMoS®II system provides extended coverage of conditions when compared with an ocean-deployed system. In complex wave regimes, WaMoS®II provides measurements out to 4 km from the radar, identifying changing conditions as they evolve at multiple locations simultaneously. No longer rely on a single data point to make critical decisions for your operation: get the entire picture with WaMoS®II .

3. Data Availability

No two situations are the same: different problems require different solutions. Rutter recognizes this, and makes all measurements from the sigma S6 WaMoS®II system readily accessible to your other systems. Easily interface your mission-critical systems with WaMoS®II in real-time, to ensure that safety is never compromised.

4. Low Cost of Ownership

Compared to ocean-deployed wave and current monitoring systems, sigma S6 WaMoS®II’s radar-based “dry solution” requires no costly in-water service. Consequently, WaMoS®II provides a lower lifecycle cost with minimal maintenance required and the added benefit of accessible remote technical support from anywhere in the world on request.

5. Safety

Rutter sigma S6 radar technology for wave and surface current monitoring, WaMoS®II, is used worldwide promoting operational safety. Mitigating the risk of onboard ship incidents, sigma S6 WaMoS®II provides the ability to monitor wave and surface current conditions to ensure safety of crews and assets during critical on-deck operations.

Rutter’s sigma S6 WaMoS®II technology is trusted worldwide for safe onboard vessel operations during variable sea states.

Wave Parameter Measurement and Spectra

sigma S6 WaMoS®II measures and displays essential wave field parameters including Significant Wave Height (Hs), Peak Wave Period (Tp), Peak Wave Length (λp), and Peak Wave Direction (θp) for wind sea and swell. Wave spectra is measured and displayed.

Surface Current Measurement

sigma S6 WaMoS®II measures and displays surface current speed (U) and direction (θU) for wind sea and swell.

Performance and Operating Range

The operating range of sigma S6 WaMoS®II extends to 4.0 km depending on X-Band radar type and installation geometry. Requiring a minimum wind speed of 3 m/s and a minimum wave height of about 0.5 m, the system easily detects wave lengths from 15 m – 600 m and covers periods from 3 sec – 18 sec.

Sea State Alarming

Sea state alarms can be set to trigger for three different conditions: when significant wave height exceeds a specified value; when peak wave lengths fall outside of a specified range; if the encounter angle between the wave system and the ship’s course moves outside of a specified range.

Dedicated Radar Systems

If no X-band radar is available or an additional sensor is required, Rutter can supply a dedicated, high-performance radar to target detection without impacting navigational requirements.  The sigma S6 WaMoS II system connects with the Rutter Radar-100S6, allowing full operator control.
